The jew and the dog
Story time:
Part I:
Once upon a time there was a Jew, he was poor, his house was too small and he had too many kids. He often felt that his life was in total chaos and he was using up all his energy just to get by from one day to the next. One day he felt he could not stand it any longer so he went to the Rabbi for advice. The Rabbi asked him if he has a goat, and the jew said yes, he had a goat in the yard, which they used for milk etc. So the Rabbi told him to take the goat to live with them inside the house. After about a week, the Rabbi met the jew and asked him how he was doing - "O Rabbi, this is terrible, the goat is eating and destrying all our things, this is even worse than it was before". So the Rabbi suggested he take the goat out - back to the yard, which he promptly did. After about a week the Rabbi met him again, and this time the jew was happy and cheerful. "You know Rabbi, ever since we got that stupid goat out the house, life is so peaceful and orderly for us".
Part II:
Once upon a much later time, there was another jew. He was not poor and his house was not too small and he did not have too many kids. Never the less, he often felt that his life was in total chaos and he was using up all his energy just to get by from one day to the next. One day, his wife told him she promised a friend that they will dog-sit his dog for a couple of weeks while the friend was traveling abroad. As he heard this his thoughts strayed to the story above, and his reaction was: "Yeah, right, apparently you could not find a goat, so we have to make do with a dog." And indeed, on the very first day, already the dog woke him up way too early and demanded its walk, and when he did not respond promptly enough, the dog peed on the porch... Well the weeks went by and the day came when the dog was returned to its owner. Happily, the jew waited for the sense of peace and quiet and relief which should come now that the dog was no longer there. But instead all he felt was that he misses the dog.
